Wool and frost – how to freshen woollen clothes without washing

Why wool doesn't like being washed

Wool is one of the most remarkable natural materials out there. It's springy, breathable, temperature-regulating and — remarkably — capable of cleaning itself. Wool fibres are covered in natural scales that repel dirt and mean woollen garments don't absorb odours nearly as quickly as cotton or polyester.

Frequent washing is actually counterproductive. It can lead to felting, shrinkage and loss of softness. Fortunately there's a natural, simple and eco-friendly way to freshen wool — freezing it.

Freezing wool – a natural way to freshen and protect

Sheep know cold better than anyone, so we took a leaf out of their book. Wool handles frost beautifully — it's what restores its freshness and protects it from moths. A few days in the freezer and your sweater comes out feeling like new.

Step-by-step: how to freeze woollen clothes

  1. Prepare the item — make sure it's clean and dry.

  2. Pack it securely — place it in a zip-lock bag, or wrap in a cotton pillowcase and then put that inside a plastic bag.

  3. Into the freezer — leave for 2–3 days at −18°C or lower.

  4. Thaw slowly — once removed, leave it in the bag at room temperature until fully thawed. Only unpack it then.

Done. No washing, no detergents, no risk of damaging the fibres.

Why freeze wool?

  • Freshness — frost neutralises odours.

  • Moth protection — low temperatures keep moths away effectively.

  • Zero chemicals — no detergents or softeners needed.

  • Longer life — less washing means better-looking wool for longer.

Freezing instead of washing — perfect for OWCA knitwear

At OWCA we believe natural solutions are the best ones. Our merino and alpaca sweaters, hats and scarves love the cold just as much as sheep on mountain pastures. The freezing method will keep them soft and in great condition for years.

Wool doesn't love frequent washing, but it loves frost. If you want to freshen up a merino sweater or an alpaca hat, put them in the freezer for a few days. Simple, eco-friendly and effective — your knitwear will thank you season after season.
